interests

Tom Doel is a second-year DPhil student with research interests in computational biology and medical image analysis. He is particularly interested in how this work can be used to improve disease monitoring and patient outcome in clinical practice. Tom's DPhil research is part of a multidisciplinary collaborative project looking at functional imaging of the lung using hyperpolarised gas MRI, and the development of new clinical markers for better assessment of lung function and patient outcome through the combination of image analysis and pulmonary computational modelling. This work is being carried out collaboratively between the Computing Laboratory, Life Sciences Interface Doctoral Training Centre, Mathematical Institute, Department of Engineering, Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine and G.E. Healthcare.

biography

Tom graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2000 with an MPhys (1st Class Honours) in Mathematical Physics. After working in the television industry and travelling round the world he gained an MSc with Distinction in Modern Applications of Mathematics in 2003 from the University of Bath. In 2004 Tom joined Voxar Limited, Edinburgh (later Barco Medical Imaging Systems and now part of Toshiba), developing clinical medical imaging software and in 2006 was promoted to Senior Software Engineer. In 2007 Tom joined the Life Sciences Interface Doctoral Training Centre at the University of Oxford, a 4-year doctoral training programme through which he is undertaking collaborative research in the Computational Biology Group at the Oxford University Computing Laboratory.
