LOCATION OF THE WORKSHOP.

The QICS school will mainly be held in the Martin Wood lecture theatre in the Physics Department - they will provide tea & coffee for the breaks. The only exception is Tuesday and Friday afternoons we will be in Lecture Theatre of the Computing Lab - on Tuesday afternoon we will have coffee in the social area (aka the basement), on Friday in the atrium. The QPL workshop also be at the Martin Wood lecture theatre in the Physics Department.

Oxford University Computing Laboratory is number 16 on this map and the Martin Wood lecture theatre is number 37. This map and this map are also useful. At the time of the workshop there will be arrows pointing to the location of the lecture room. Your hotel, hostel or B&B will be happy to inform you about local busses which bring you to the workshop site.

WHERE TO SLEEP.

Oxford has a wide variety of places to stay, including junior and senior college accomodation, hotels, hostels, and in particular many bed & breakfasts (B&Bs) and guest houses. We would in particular recommend the B&Bs since they tend to be much cheaper than hotels, are easier to book that college accomodation, and the British breakfast keeps you going for the whole day.

On this map accommodation is available where the logo of the logo of the Oxford Association of Hotels and Guest Houses appears. Every location within the Ring Road (= green closed loop) has easy bus access to the center. This interactive page classifies B&B's by rating. Particularly well located are Parklands and Galaxie Hotel. Here is a more comprehensive listing of all B&Bs, a comprehensive listing of all hotels and a comprehensive listing of all hostels.

Here is the most comprehensive listing where you can search by location and other preferences and allows a quick check of availability. You first want to pick Central and Jericho, then Summertown, Wolvercote, Bottley Road, Abingdon Road, Cowley Road Area (the multicultural downtown of Oxford) and Iffley Road. These still allow you to walk to the Computing Laboratory in less than 30 minutes and have good bus connections too.

GETTING TO OXFORD.

The closest airport to Oxford is Heathrow Airport, which is Britain's main connection to the rest of the world. Oxford can be reached from Heathrow Airport by a convenient one-hour busride with the Airline. In the Heathrow Terminal 1,2,3 and 5 you follow the signs to the Central Bus/Coach Station for this purpose. If you land in Terminal 4 you need to use the Heathrow Express to go to Terminals 1,2,3 (free of charge). Gatwick Airport will require a two-hour slightly less frequent busride, again on the Airline.

From Brussels and Paris you can reach London by the Eurostar (a very fast train), and then continue your journey either by train or by a busride. For busses, either on the Oxford Express or the Oxford Tube, and trains to Oxford go from Paddington Station which can be reached by the Tube. For all these buses you can pay the busdriver in Pounds, US Dollars or Euros.

Detailed information on trains within the UK is at the national rail interactive website.
