COMPUTING LABORATORY
Grade 7 Research Assistant Post
in
AASN4IP Project: Actuated Acoustic Sensor Networks for Industrial Processes
Oxford Uni
versity Computing Laboratory (OUCL) has been awarded an EPSRC grant to investigate actuated sensor networks for monitoring industrial processes in enclosed aqueous environments
.
This research is led by Dr Niki Trigoni at the Oxford University Computing Laboratory, in collaboration with Dr Peter N. Green, Dr Trevor York and Mr Peter R. Green at the University of Manchester. The project will employ a postdoctoral Research Assistant and a doctoral student at OUCL, and has the aim of improving the existing monitoring technology by developing distributed algorithms for mapping and exploration of enclosed and cluttered underwater environments, hereafter called ponds.
The Research Assistant (RA) will work with the doctoral student on 1) designing distributed localization algorithms that allow small underwater vehicles - called minnows - to localize themselves within a pond; 2) designing distributed algorithms for mapping the bottom of ponds using minnows; 3) designing distributed algorithms for exploring ponds and tasking location-aware or location-unaware fixed sensors scattered at the bottom of the pond; and 4) evaluating localization, mapping and exploration algorithms in simulation and real pond environments
.
It is anticipated that the RA will carry out a substantial part of the implementation on sensor and mobile node platforms, and so will need to have strong coding skills and the ability to organize experiments and document results in a timely fashion. Further, the RA will be expected to assist in writing papers and in supervising the doctoral student.
Salary will be on the University grade 7 scale (currently £27,466 - £33,780 p.a). The post is available from September 2008 for three years, is pensionable and includes an annual leave entitlement of 38 days per year, inclusive of public holidays and university closed periods.
